1. Databases in Fabric and Database Hub Expand Fabric’s Operational Scope

One of the major developments likely to gain momentum across the Fabric ecosystem is the expansion of databases in Fabric.

The introduction of capabilities linked to Fabric Databases and Cosmos DB in Fabric points to an important shift: bringing operational data, analytics and artificial intelligence closer together.

Traditionally, companies have kept transactional and analytical systems separate.

Business applications run on operational databases; data is then extracted, transformed and loaded into analytical environments, where it is consumed through reports, AI models or decision-making processes. This separation still makes sense in many scenarios, but it also creates latency, duplication and complexity.

Fabric is moving towards a model where certain types of operational data can sit closer to OneLake, Power BI and semantic models, advanced analytics and AI agents.

Database Hub points in the same direction. Designed as a central place within Fabric to discover and manage databases, its evolution strengthens Fabric’s role as a platform that can connect operational and analytical data more coherently, including in hybrid enterprise architectures.

This does not mean every architecture needs to be redesigned immediately. It means the conversation is changing: data is no longer seen only as something that moves from operational systems into analytical environments, but as an asset that can serve multiple purposes within a more integrated platform.

In parallel, OneLake Security reinforces the idea of applying access policies and data protection more consistently to the data stored in OneLake, reducing dependency on isolated controls within each individual tool or workload.

For data leaders, this shift matters because it changes how the success of a Fabric implementation should be measured.

Adoption should not be evaluated only by the number of workspaces, reports or pipelines created. A data platform truly scales when its assets are easy to find, understandable, reusable, trusted and secure.

The evolution of OneLake Catalog and OneLake Security points to one of the most important shifts in Fabric: moving from simply centralizing data to governing it systematically within the platform itself.

4. The Evolution of Power BI: Direct Lake, Semantic Models and New Developer Capabilities 

Power BI will remain one of the primary entry points to Microsoft Fabric for many organizations. However, its role within the platform is evolving.

It is no longer only about building dashboards and reports. Power BI is increasingly becoming part of an enterprise semantic layer that allows organizations to define metrics, dimensions, relationships and business logic consistently, so they can be reused across different use cases.

This evolution is especially relevant in a context where the same data no longer feeds only reports, but also applications, embedded experiences, Copilots and agents.

From Building Reports to Standardizing How the Business Interprets Data

Capabilities such as Direct Lake, DAX User Defined Functions, Visual Calculations, Developer Mode, Org Apps and the evolution of semantic models point to a Power BI that is increasingly integrated into the full data and analytics lifecycle.

For an individual user, some of these updates may seem incremental. At enterprise scale, their impact is much greater: they help reuse business logic, reduce duplication, improve governance, professionalize development and maintain consistent definitions across teams and use cases.

This is especially important because many organizations have scaled Power BI very quickly.

That growth has been essential to democratizing access to data, but it has also created common challenges: duplicated metrics, inconsistent semantic models, reports that are difficult to maintain, dependency on specific users, workspace proliferation and uneven levels of governance across business areas.

Fabric creates an opportunity to address part of that fragmentation.

5. Real-Time Intelligence: Anomaly Detection and the Convergence of Batch and Streaming 

For years, much of enterprise analytics has focused on explaining what has already happened: daily reports, weekly close processes, monthly dashboards and batch workflows.

That approach remains necessary, but more and more business processes now require a different capability: the ability to detect, interpret and act while an event still has business impact.

This is where Real-Time Intelligence comes in: the Microsoft Fabric workload designed for processing and analyzing streaming and event data.

From Observing What Happens to Responding While It Still Matters

Real-Time Intelligence brings together ingestion, storage, querying, visualization and action based on real-time data in a single environment.

Capabilities such as Eventstream, Eventhouse, Real-Time Dashboards, Activator and Real-Time Hub make it possible to integrate this data into the Fabric ecosystem and reduce the time between a signal and a decision.

The move toward greater convergence between batch and streaming, together with capabilities such as Eventhouse Monitoring and Anomaly Detection, points to scenarios where organizations can combine historical and real-time data to detect deviations, identify anomalies and respond earlier.

From Dashboard to Decision System

The goal is no longer only for a person to open a dashboard and decide what to do next.

Fabric is bringing real-time data closer to rules, automations, Copilots and agents, enabling certain events to trigger alerts, workflows or actions immediately and in a governed way.

Its goal is to create a shared context layer so that people, applications and agents interpret business concepts in a consistent way.

This will be especially important for enterprise AI. An agent may be able to access data, but it also needs to understand what concepts such as customer, contract, risk, margin or incident mean, and how they relate to one another.

Fabric IQ connects semantic models, ontologies, graphs, operational data and real-time signals to structure that knowledge and make it reusable.

Looking ahead to the final quarter of the year, capabilities such as Operations Agents, Plan in Fabric IQ and Ontology Public API also suggest that this context layer will become increasingly connected to planning, applications and automated operations.

Access to data is not the same as access to context. To scale AI agents, companies will need a governed, shared layer of meaning.

For organizations looking to move forward with AI, preparing data will no longer be only about integrating it and improving its quality. It will also mean preparing the context that gives agents the business understanding they need.

7. Interoperability with Databricks and Snowflake: Fabric in Hybrid Environments 

Large organizations rarely operate within a fully homogeneous technology stack. Even in Microsoft-centric environments, it is common to run Databricks, Snowflake, legacy systems, SaaS applications, departmental platforms and multicloud environments side by side.

That is why interoperability will be one of the key themes in the evolution of Fabric.

Capabilities such as OneLake, shortcuts, mirroring, federation and integration with other ecosystems respond to a very specific reality: modernization does not always mean replacing everything that already exists.

In many cases, the goal will be to connect platforms, reduce duplication, improve governance and make data easier to reuse without forcing unnecessary migrations.

Fabric will become more valuable when it can integrate into complex data architectures without becoming another silo within the enterprise architecture.

The relationship with Databricks and Snowflake will be especially relevant in this context.

For many companies, the challenge will not be choosing a single platform, but defining the role each platform should play and how to make them coexist in an efficient, governed and scalable way.

 

8. New RAG, Vector and Agent Capabilities: AI Needs More Than Models 

Another important area to watch will be the evolution of AI capabilities, especially those linked to RAG, vector search, agents and databases in Fabric.

The enthusiasm around generative AI has led many companies to launch pilots quickly. However, many of these projects stall when they meet the reality of enterprise data: fragmented sources, unclear permissions, poor data quality, lack of context, missing lineage or difficulty connecting outputs to business processes.

Fabric’s evolution toward more AI-ready capabilities is aimed precisely at reducing that gap. Enterprise AI does not depend only on access to a powerful model. It needs governed data, semantic context, permissions, traceability, freshness and integration with business processes.

The most visible Microsoft Fabric updates are often related to AI, agents or real-time intelligence. Runtime 2.0, for example, brings advances in Spark, Delta Lake, Python, Scala and the execution stack. For CIOs, CDOs and platform leaders, these types of improvements are essential.
