Power BI continues to evolve at a fast pace. As it does every month, Microsoft has introduced new capabilities that directly affect how organisations design reports, distribute analytics content, manage semantic models and scale their BI environments.

In this article, we review the 10 Power BI July 2026 updates you should not miss.

This is not just a list of technical improvements. Many of these updates point to a clear evolution of Power BI towards a more governed, more automatable and more deeply integrated environment within Microsoft Fabric.

Among the most relevant updates are improvements to Modern Visual Defaults, conditional formatting for charts with legends, new capabilities for org apps, bookmark support, APIs to automate app and audience management, Model Options in Power BI Service, TMDL View on the web and enhancements to the mobile experience.

1. Modern Visual Defaults: More Visual Control for Corporate Reports

Microsoft has expanded the Modern Visual Defaults preview with a new experience that allows users to customise the current theme directly from the Format pane.

This improvement makes it possible to set report-level defaults and apply them to all visuals across all pages, without having to configure each element manually.

Users can also work with colour palettes and configure borders, corner radius, padding, backgrounds, tooltips, shadows and other visual elements in a more centralised way.

In practical terms, this is not just an aesthetic improvement. In corporate environments, visual consistency has a direct impact on usability, trust and speed of interpretation. A report with inconsistent colours, layouts or visual criteria across pages can create uncertainty even when the underlying data is correct.

The option to export a custom theme and reuse it across other reports also has a governance dimension. It helps BI teams define shared visual standards and allows report authors to work within a common framework. In large organisations, where dozens or even hundreds of reports may be active, this reduces reliance on manual formatting and contributes to a more consistent user experience.

2. Conditional Formatting for Line Charts and Visuals with Legends 

Conditional formatting for line charts and visuals with legends is now generally available. According to Microsoft, this capability now extends to bar charts, column charts, pie charts, donut charts and line charts when a legend is used, allowing report authors to apply conditional colours and keep colours consistent across visuals through DAX measures.

This matters because colour in BI is not decorative. It is semantic. When the same category appears in different colours across different visuals, users are forced to reinterpret the report each time. When colours are governed by a measure, the design becomes more closely aligned with business logic.

In executive dashboards, this can make the difference between fast interpretation and unnecessary confusion. If a line represents the most recent year, a critical segment or a priority category, conditional formatting helps the visual support the data narrative more accurately.

3. Navigation and User Experience: Small Improvements With Impact

The update also includes improvements to page tab navigation. According to Microsoft, it is now easier to reorganise reports with many pages: when authors drag a page tab towards the edge of the tab bar, the tabs continue scrolling until they reach the desired position. The page navigation buttons have also been made more precise.

At first glance, this may seem like a minor improvement. In practice, it addresses one of the most common issues in corporate reporting: progressive report growth.

Many reports start with just a few pages and gradually accumulate views by department, country, business line, period or role. As a report grows, keeping it organised, readable and easy to navigate becomes a real operational task.

The simplification of visual title spacing follows the same logic. Microsoft has unified spacing controls around a “space above” approach, making it easier to control the separation between subtitles, dividers and the chart area. Existing reports are automatically adjusted without changing their appearance.

These changes are discreet, but relevant. In enterprise BI, user experience does not depend on one major component alone, but on many small decisions that reduce friction.

When report authors spend less time organising, adjusting and maintaining reports, data teams can focus more on improving models, metrics and adoption.

4. Org Apps With Audiences: Personalised Distribution Without Losing Central Control 

One of the most important Power BI updates in July 2026 is the general availability of org apps with audiences.

App creators can now deliver different content experiences to different user groups within the same app, customising navigation and visible items without having to manage multiple separate apps.

For large organisations, the implication is clear: this makes it possible to combine personalisation and governance.

Traditionally, organisations face a constant tension. On the one hand, each department or user group needs access to the content that is relevant to them. On the other, multiplying apps, workspaces or report versions creates complexity, duplication and additional administrative burden.

Audiences in org apps help resolve that tension. A single governed container can deliver different experiences to executives, operations, finance, sales or frontline teams. This reduces noise for end users while keeping a more controlled structure for the teams responsible for BI.

Microsoft has also added bookmark support for reports inside org apps. Users can access both author-created bookmarks and personal bookmarks, making it easier to return to saved views with specific filters, selections and visual states.

This is not a minor improvement. In organisations with complex reporting environments, users do not always consume reports from the default view.

A finance director may regularly review a specific combination of period, business unit and scenario. An operations manager may return to the same selection of sites, KPIs and alerts. Allowing those views to be preserved within org apps reduces navigation time and improves adoption.

Power BI also introduces Storytelling in PowerPoint support for reports and visuals in org apps. This allows users to add live report pages and visuals from org app content into PowerPoint presentations.

For executive environments, this connection is especially relevant. Many decisions are not made inside the report itself, but in committees, meetings and presentations. Bringing live data into PowerPoint reduces the risk of working with outdated screenshots and brings reporting closer to the natural flow of business communication. 

Org apps with audiences strengthen Power BI as a corporate analytics distribution channel: a single governed environment can deliver different experiences to different user groups without fragmenting content administration.

5. APIs and Automation: Power BI as a Platform That Can Be Managed at Scale 

The July update also introduces new REST APIs for org apps, audiences and paginated reports.

Developers and administrators can now create, read, update, delete and list org app items and audiences through Microsoft Fabric REST APIs.

CRUD support has also been added for paginated reports, making it possible to automate their lifecycle, deployment and administration.

This is especially important for organisations with mature BI practices. When Power BI is used at departmental level, many tasks can still be managed manually. But when Power BI operates at scale, automation is no longer optional.

APIs allow organisations to move towards more industrialised administration models: controlled deployments, integration with internal processes, bulk app management, audience updates, paginated report automation and fewer repetitive tasks.

In other words, Power BI is becoming more of an operational analytics platform and less of a standalone visualisation tool.

This also has implications for data governance teams. The more analytical content is distributed, the more important it becomes to control who sees what, how content is updated, which versions are published and how traceability is maintained. APIs do not replace data governance, but they make it easier to execute.

6. Semantic Modelling: Documentation, Control and Web-Based Workflows 

Microsoft has introduced measure descriptions using triple-slash /// comments, aligned with the syntax already supported by TMDL.

This means authors can now document a measure directly where they write it, and that description travels with the measure in the model.

This improvement may seem technical, but it addresses a very common issue: semantic models in Power BI deteriorate when knowledge remains only in the head of the person who created them. A poorly documented measure can lead to misinterpretation, incorrect reuse or excessive dependency on one specific person.

Documenting metrics within the authoring workflow helps consolidate a shared business language. If a year-over-year growth measure, adjusted margin or conversion metric has a clear description, the model becomes easier to understand and reuse. In enterprise BI, this is an essential part of semantic governance. 

7. Model Options in Power BI Service: Model Configuration From the Web 

Microsoft has also brought Model Options to Power BI Service. With this update, the model options dialog is now available directly in web modelling, allowing users to configure model-level behaviours and metadata without necessarily going back to Power BI Desktop.

The available options include type detection, relationships, time intelligence, parallel loading, import locale and DirectQuery-related settings.

The enterprise reading is clear: more modelling capabilities are moving to the web. This reduces dependence on the desktop experience, supports more collaborative workflows and brings model administration closer to the environment where content is consumed and governed.

8. TMDL View on the Web: Editing Semantic Models From the Browser 

The update also introduces TMDL View on the Web.

Microsoft explains that developers can write, modify and apply changes to model objects directly from a code editor using Tabular Model Definition Language, without switching to Desktop or downloading model files.

The experience provides code-level visibility into tables, measures, relationships and other metadata, enabling bulk edits, automation of repetitive tasks and reuse of definitions.

This development reinforces a key idea: the semantic model is no longer just a technical layer. It is a corporate asset.

The more central Power BI becomes to decision-making, the more important it is to manage definitions, relationships and measures with proper engineering, documentation and governance standards.

A well-governed semantic model allows different business areas to work from shared definitions. Without that common layer, Power BI may multiply reports, but it will not necessarily multiply trust.

9. Mobile: Org App Audiences Reach Users on the Move 

Another relevant update is the arrival of org app audiences in Power BI mobile apps.

With this update, iOS and Android users can open an org app and see content based on their assigned audience, accessing the reports, dashboards and role-specific content that are most relevant to them.

This improvement reflects an increasingly visible reality: data consumption does not only happen at the desktop.

Executives, managers, sales teams, operations staff and frontline users may all need to access information while they are on the move. But bringing BI to mobile is not simply about making reports smaller. It is about reducing noise, adding context and adapting navigation to the user’s role.

Audiences in mobile help address exactly that. A mobile user does not need to browse the entire analytics structure of the organisation. They need fast access to the information that affects their work.

From an adoption perspective, this can be decisive: the more closely the experience matches the user’s context, the more likely it is to be used.

10. New Custom Visuals for Power BI 

Microsoft also includes several updates to third-party Power BI custom visuals in the July 2026 release.

These additions expand the possibilities for analysis, storytelling and operational monitoring in Power BI, especially in scenarios where standard visuals are not enough.

Drill Down Scatter PRO by ZoomCharts

Drill Down Scatter PRO enables users to explore scatter plots with a higher level of interaction.

The visual supports drill-down across different hierarchical levels, zooming into dense data clusters and navigating large volumes of information to analyse trends, outliers and relationships with greater precision.

It also includes dynamic regression lines, area or threshold highlighting and lasso selection, making it useful for customer segmentation, sales analysis and operational monitoring.

Neutral variance color in Zebra BI Tables

 Zebra BI Tables and Charts introduces Neutral Variance Color, a feature that allows users to define a tolerance zone so that small deviations are not automatically shown as alerts.

For example, if a ±5% variance against plan is considered acceptable, a -3% result can remain neutral, while a -7% drop would be marked in red. In executive dashboards, this helps reduce false alarms and focus attention on the variances that actually require a decision. 

Heatmap by Powerviz

Heatmap by Powerviz makes it possible to visualise data density and value distribution through colour gradients in a matrix format. It is designed to help users identify patterns, correlations and outliers more intuitively.

Its capabilities include colour palettes, colour-blind mode, custom labels, reference lines, row and column totals, null value handling, small multiples, conditional formatting and Top/Bottom N ranking.

Gantt by Profitbase

Gantt by Profitbase introduces new capabilities in version 3.1, especially for visual project management.

The update allows users to apply conditional formatting rules independently at specific hierarchy levels, making it easier to identify tasks at risk, owners or relevant milestones. It also adds condition-based row expansion and collapse, default scroll position at the start of the chart and inclusion of the final day in duration calculations.

Power BI, Fabric and the New Standard for Enterprise BI 

The Power BI July 2026 update reinforces Microsoft’s move towards a more unified analytics platform.

Power BI can no longer be understood in isolation. Its evolution is increasingly connected to Fabric, semantic models, APIs, governance and controlled content distribution.
